Why the name changed
“Compromise agreement” was the older label for the same type of document. Legislation and practice moved toward the term “settlement agreement” to describe a negotiated resolution. If you see either phrase in correspondence, the underlying idea is similar: a written agreement that settles employment claims in return for consideration.
What stayed the same
You still need appropriate advice, identification of the claims being settled, and clear terms about payments and obligations. The label on the cover does not replace the need to read the schedule and understand how payments may be taxed and what you are giving up.
Practical tip
Do not assume a document titled “compromise agreement” is outdated or informal. Treat every draft as legally binding once signed, and take independent advice before committing.
